Wyatt, the main character in Camp Valor was a well behaved kid through his early life. He had good grades even though he was a crazy kid and didn't get into trouble. Though this all changed when his father left him. “Wyatt himself had always been a little on the wild side, but his grades never showed it.” When he changed for the worse he got into trouble, made life harder for his mother and little brother, and school was the least of his worries. This eventually ends him up facing 20 years in prison. My art shows how he used to be a happy kid and went down a very dark path very quick.
Wyatt, in a lot of ways, reminds me of Connor from "Unwind". He has kinda the same "troubled kid" trope, and "more than meets the eye" thing going for him. It'll be interesting to see how the camp effects his personality, and how similar the changes Wyatt endures are to Connors changes. it seems to be a fairly common character ark, especially in books for teens.
Wyatt seems very similar to Connor, but Connor had always been a troublemaker, while Wyatt seems to have been fine up until a certain point. What did Wyatt do to get landed in prison? -Noelle Myrick
From what I've read in the book thus far, it seems like McEwan likes to portray the darker side of reality. The direction the story is heading in leads me to believe that in the future the kids will have to employ their growing repertoire of skills to either protect themselves or others from America's enemies. Obviously that's not a big surprise, but I foresee it being much darker than I originally anticipated, as in more gruesome.
With the parallel story of Degas going on next to Wyats, it appears that Degas will be the “super villain” of the story. After his parents get killed, he slips into depression he gets kinda spooky.
I agree. I like that it shows more realism. McEvan is the co writer of American Sniper which adds realism to the military theme in this book. That often lacks in a lot of books.
Wyatt is the main character in this novel. He seems to get in trouble as a kid does but his crazy like lifestyle does not match up with alot of his grades and just his overall thinking. He gets in trouble but seems alot smarter than what hes letting off. -Hunter
His father leaving him, made him lose all motivation for school or other important things. He also was very troublesome to his mom and brother. I think that happens a lot on the real world. I like the dark realism in this book.
Wyatt was a good kid in the beginning, but then his dad had left and he started to be a little more rebellious. He was friends with a kid named Derrick who was also troubled. He seems very loyal and a little bit of an adrenaline junkie, I realized this when he tried to sneak out, “ Wyatt needed to move ninja quiet. He dropped to his knees, pushed the door open, and crawled out nice and slow.” He is also takes care of those he loves like when he comforts his brother while he is trying to sneak out he made time for him to make him feel better.
id agree that he cares about his family and those close to him, but im a little over 3/4ths of the way through the book and it doesn't seem to be an outstanding part of his personality. Not to say it isn't there, just that the author doesn't highlight it with many events other than at the beginning (so far)

Another reason I picked this quote is because I would have said something similar if not exactly this. I am connecting the quote “Its like… his DNA has changed” to the Character Cam in Unwholly (Unwind Sequel). Cam doesn't really exist because he is made up completely of unwind parts, so his DNA did change and he now had many different strands of DNA in him. In Camp Valor his mother was talking to his girlfriend about his developed sun allergy I am connecting Wyatt being a hacker to my sister. When Wyatt arrives at camp Valor it reminds me of when Connor and Risa arrived at the Graveyard. Getting to know their way around camp getting the whole idea of where they are and what th y are doing. They meet the admaail and get assigned jobs. I know my drawing is from a past chapter. I drew Wyatt in the court house getting his choice of going to jail or going to camp valor. I drew this because it was a key sort of visual/scene . I decided to do it in black and white because that is kinda how i imagined it. I feel like if I was either sentenced to jail or a camp. My vision would lose color and my adrenaline would be pumping though me from the build up of my sentencing .there is a bit of color in his tie it said it was maroon (I only had red) but it was something that stuck out to me and was easy to visualise, it said “Star Trek Voyager pin on a maroon tie” (Ewen Pg 41) I decided to highlight this because it would attract you to look at his tiny tie.
That is a similar idea to what I drew. cool. I think that represents it well. He had to chose between two options and both were hard and took away his every day freedoms, but one gave him a new start.
turned out great! I wish I could've done the illustration task for one of the weeks, but c'est la vie. only thing I'd like to point out is that he didn't get the choice to go to camp valor until after he was sentenced and in jail, because its like a top secret thing.
Wyatt: A strong willed boy who seeks adventure. He is the main character so far and is adjusting to his new life at camp valor. He has good morals despite his crime that ended him up at camp valor and even saved his teammates life from drowning showing his team spirit. His theme is redemption.
Hud: A very strong, athletic, skilled character. He is always in the lead when it comes to tasks and activities at camp valor. He is a show off, jerk sometimes and a very nice guy the next wyatt notices. Despite his flaws he shows much teamwork and willingness to help other struggling campers in their tasks, example: the log task when the girl couldn't lift her part. His theme is Hard work.
Dolly: Her theme is beauty. She is a pretty girl yet with a vicious strong personality. She can’t always finish her tasks when it comes to strength, but holds her own when it comes to wrestling or tasks that involve the brain. Wyatt has a crush on her and sometimes thinks she likes him back, but her uptight personality confuses him greatly.
I think you nailed Wyatt's theme. I don't think I would've come up with redemption, but that's very fitting. He kind of has that stereo typical redemption arc that you see with many action storys. Without spoiling to much of the book, I think your opinion of Hud will change (for better or for worse), or at least I probably would've focus more on one of his attributes that you listed.
I agree with your Dollys theme and really enjoyed reading your explaination. Her theme is beauty I can agree to that she is beautiful in her own special ways.
you did an awesome job on wyatts theme. i think he has good intentions but doent know how to get to the end result. i feel like hes also trying to prove to himself hes a good person - Micah
“As you begin a life of service to your nation, your family, and your god, may your experience at Valor be like the sharpening stone. A blunt and hard movable object that is used to bring an edge to a blade.” I felt like this was one of the more powerful quotes in the book. Despite coming from closer to the beginning, it drives home the point of camp valor in a short and concise manner.
“The raft bucked and plunged. Ebys body thrashed and jerked, eyes and tongue lolling, No clear signs of life. His blood streaming so heavily wyatt could taste copper. White water boiled up around their faces. They weren't submerged, but they might as well have been. “ This quote just employed the use of some pretty good imagery that really made the scene for me. It added a lot of extra suspense to an already suspenseful moment, and was the final build up to the end of their test.
“The old man and I have determined that hud intended to put wyatt in danger. This intent, not mistake, is cause for removal from valor.” Hud being expelled from camp valor is a momentous occasion in the book. At the moment of this quote, a ball has started rolling putting a chain of events into action that lead to the death of multiple characters, and in the long run, the end of the glow worm.
“Character?(...)We are all criminals. Everyone of us has lied or cheated or stolen and betrayed ourselves and others, that's how we got here. If character isn't something that can change then we all should leave.” I enjoyed this quote from Wyatt as it gives some insight into his personnel perspective on human nature. It shows that Wyatt believes people can change, and he believes in 2nd chances. For me this makes Wyatt seem more personable, and less logistical in nature further developing his character.
“Doctor choy moved to let go of Huds hand, and hud pounced. Seizing her by the wrist and pulling her onto the bed with him. As the doctor screamed, Hud spat the two blue pills into her mouth and clamped his hand over her. He pinned her down and waited until the little blue pills worked on the doc. 90 seconds later doctor choy was out cold.” The combination of description, and importance is why I chose this final quote. It's the 2nd stage in Hud’s poor decision making that impacts the path the story takes in arguably one of the largest ways. Leading to again, the death of multiple characters, and in the long run, the end of the glow worm, and the end of the book. And as a side note, I just enjoy reading McEwens Action scenes, because one of the things I think he does best is describing actions of characters in detail.
I think the second quote is really good imagery. I am not as far along in the book as you, but it looks like Hud is bad. I wouldn't have thought of him like that.
I like your use of figurative language in your explaination and examples. You put in your example "All men are criminals" I agree with this as you said everyone has cheated or stolen or something else. Everyone has done bad in their life.
I really like your first quote. i feel like until we find things we are intrested in or good at we are all kinda dull. the same until we find our own hobbies and indiviuality and that kinda gives us an edge and keeps us sharp. by learning new skills and gaining new hobbys it keeps us sharp
My favorite quote is "You fight or you fight" this quote is saying rather he fights in a war or is just living day to day everyday can be a battle. I like this quote as I relate to it pretty well. Currently in the book I think people are really starting to learn and see how ugly the world truely is. Wyatt has is going thru hell having gine to thuis camp ,but thats the least of it. He has met a canibal and many other messed up people and I think its really starting to get to his menttal health. People in this book have done wrong but this is just cruel. - Hunter K
Wyatt seems strong despite the horrors he has seen. He is quickly adapting to life as a camp member. He hates the idea of hurting people, but his teams lives are more important to him. I like your take on it
Timeline of Events Wyatt is framed for his friend's crime. Unknown man visits him in jail and asks if he wants to leave prison for Camp Valor. Campers make it through hell week Wyatt and the other members on his team begin the operation to take down glow worm. Dolly is captured by glowworm and Wyatt and his team members go after him.
Predictions I think that Hud is a bad character because he shows too much arrogance and doesn't seem to care for the lives of his team members. He argues with Wyatt while in the middle of an operation which almost jeopardizes it. On that same mission he Doesn't stay at his post to cover Wyatt’s back which almost got him killed. I think Wyatt and Dolly will get together. Dolly and Hud had a thing going on towards the beginning when wyatt first got to the camp, but I think she realized Hud was not a great guy. Wyatt and Dolly had a moment in the middle of their training, but he didn't think she thought much of it. After Escobar was shot in the head during a shootout with the Policía Nacional de Colombia his subordinates scrambled to try and take power of the Medellín Cartel. In Camp Valor after Degas dies, his right hand man tries to take control of the crime ring. 2- Wyatt’s father leaving: This is a tragedy in any case, and I love how the story depicts how negatively not having a father figure can be in childhood development. This occurrence made me think about the father absence crisis in America. According to the US census bureau, 18.4 million children, or 1 in 4 kids, live in a home without any sort of father figure (blood related or otherwise). Statistics from the US census bureau (2020) living arrangements of children under 18 years old: 1960 to present show that children in these situations have a 4x greater risk of poverty, more likely to have behavioral problems, more likely to face abuse and neglect, 7x more likely to become pregnant as a teen, more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, more likely to go to prison, 2x more likely to suffer from obesity, more likely to commit crime, and 2x more likely to drop out of high school.
